How to Install PhpMyAdmin on Ubuntu 14.04

Introduction

phpMyAdmin is a free software tool written in PHP, intended to handle the administration of MySQL over the Web. phpMyAdmin supports a wide range of operations on MySQL and MariaDB. Frequently used operations (managing databases, tables, columns, relations, indexes, users, permissions, etc) can be performed via the user interface, while you still have the ability to directly execute any SQL statement. More information about phpMyAdmin you can see here: https://www.phpmyadmin.net

Before we are able to install phpMyAdmin we must have Apache server installed. If you do not have Apache installed yet please check out this guide: How to install Apache2 and PHP5 on Ubuntu 14.04.

Step 1: Install phpMyAdmin

The installation of phpMyAdmin is very simple. You can do that with this simple commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install phpmyadmin

When the installation starts you will be asked few questions. Answer them correctly in order to install phpMyAdmin correctly.

NOTE: When the first prompt appears, apache2 is highlighted, but not selected. If you do not hit "SPACE" to select Apache, the installer will not move the necessary files during installation. Hit "SPACE", "TAB", and then "ENTER" to select Apache.

Now we have successfuly installed phpMyAdmin and we have to enable the needed modules. We have to enable php5-mcrypt . We can do that very easy, just type the following command:

sudo php5enmod mcrypt

Now we have to enable the changes with:

sudo apache2 restart

CONGRATULATIONS!

You can now access your phpMyAdmin by typing the following address in your browser:

http://www.your-domain.com/phpmyadmin

You will see the following:

There you have to type your MySQL username and password. If they are correct you'll be able to enter and menage your databases.

That's it!
